Summary of contents

The main objective is to give a basic knowledge about the main wireless network technologies, architectures, protocols and standards. Three main areas will be introduced and described: i) the wireless Local/Personal Area Network (W/PLAN) current standard technologies with a hint to the wireless access network; ii) the cellular radio mobile networks (GSM, UMTS, LTE); iii) the mobility management in packet (IP) network.



The following arguments represents the minimum knowledge required to the students for following the course in an effective way: basic concepts of data networking, circuit and packet switching, functional architectures, ISO OSI architecture, TCP/IP architecture, physical layer main characteristics (cables, optical fiber), data layer basic characteristics, Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 protocol, Layer 2 bridging/switching, IPv4 basic concepts, IP routing basics, TCP/UDP basic knowledge.
