Dr. Roberto Bruschi, Ph.D.

Roberto Bruschi was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1977. He received his "laurea" degree (equivalent to MSc) in Telecommunication Engineering in 2002, and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering in 2006 from the University of Genoa.

He is currently a researcher of the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, and works with the Telematics and Telecommunication Networks Lab. (TNT) at the Department of Communications, Computer and Systems Science (DIST) of the University of Genoa.

Roberto is the coordinator of the INPUT ("In-Network Programmability for next-generation personal cloUd service supporT") project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program. Roberto is also the Principal Investigator of the GreenNet project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and Education under the FIRB "Futuro in Ricerca" program. He took part to the activities of many national and European projects (e.g., FP7 IP ECONET, FP7 NoE TREND, PRIN SORPASSO and EFFICIENT). In the ECONET project, he served as technical project manager for monitoring the R&D activities of the entire project. He also leaded four Econet technical tasks.

Roberto actively collaborates with many industries, such as Telecom Italia, NetLogic, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, etc., and industrial fora, like GeSI.

He has co-authored over 80 papers in international journals, book chapters and international conference proceedings. He also acts as reviewer for many different international journals and conferences. From May 2015, Roberto serves as Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications - Series on Green Communications and Networking. In 2009, Roberto won the best paper award at the IEEE ICC conference, and in 2010 at the IEEE GreenCom workshop.

Roberto is a Senior Member of IEEE Communication Society. He also received the Italian "National Scientific Qualification" (art.16 of the law 30 December 2010, n.240) as associate professor in the 01/B2 (Computer Science) and the 09/F2 (Telecommunications Engineering) sectors.

His current main research interests include green networking, software defined networks, network function virtualization, and cloud networking.

H2020 5G-PPP MATILDA Innovation Action (Coordinator: Prof. Franco Davoli)

The vision of MATILDA is to design and implement a holistic 5G end-to-end services operational framework tackling the lifecycle of design, development and orchestration of 5G-ready applications and 5G network services over programmable infrastructure, following a unified programmability model and a set of control abstractions.
It aims to devise and realize a radical shift in the development of software for 5G-ready applications as well as virtual and physical network functions and network services, through the adoption of a unified programmability model, the definition of proper abstractions and the creation of an open development environment that may be used by application as well as network functions developers.
Intelligent and unified orchestration mechanisms will be applied for the automated placement of the 5G-ready applications and the creation and maintenance of the required network slices. Deployment and runtime policies enforcement is provided through a set of optimisation mechanisms providing deployment plans based on high level objectives and a set of mechanisms supporting runtime adaptation of the application components and/or network functions based on policies defined on behalf of a services provider.
Multi-site management of the cloud/edge computing and IoT resources is supported by a multi-site virtualized infrastructure manager, while the lifecycle management of the supported Virtual Network Functions Forwarding Graphs (VNF-FGs) as well as a set of network management activities are provided by a multi-site NFV Orchestrator (NFVO). Network and application-oriented analytics and profiling mechanisms are supported based on realtime as well as a posteriori processing of the collected data from a set of monitoring streams. The developed 5G-ready application components, applications, virtual network functions and application-aware network services are made available for open-source or commercial purposes, re-use and extension through a 5G marketplace.

H2020 INPUT Research and Innovation Action (Coordinator: Dr. Roberto Bruschi)

INPUT is a research project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program (Call H2020-ICT-2014-1, Grant no. 644672). The project, started in Juanuary 2015, aims at designing a novel infrastructure and paradigm to support Future Internet personal cloud services in a more scalable and sustainable way and with innovative added-value capabilities. The INPUT technologies will enable next-generation cloud applications to go beyond classical service models, and even to replace physical Smart Devices, usually placed in users’ homes (e.g., set-top-boxes, etc.) or deployed around for monitoring purposes (e.g., sensors), with their virtual images, providing them to users “as a Service.”

H2020 ARCADIA Research and Innovation Action

ARCADIA is a research project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program. The project, started in Juanuary 2015, aims to provide a novel reconfigurable by design highly distributed applications’ development paradigm over programmable infrastructure. The objective is to facilitate application developers to develop software that is able to benefit of the underlying infrastructure, while in parallel support the deployment and dynamic configuration of applications in an optimal and autonomic manner.

ECONET (low Energy COnsumption NETworks) project is a 3-year IP project (running from October 2010 to September 2013) co-funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 7 (FP7), addressing the Strategic Objective ICT-2009.1.1 “The Network of the Future”.
The ECONET project aims at studying and exploiting dynamic adaptive technologies (based on standby and performance scaling capabilities) for wired network devices that allow saving energy when a device (or part of it) is not used.
The project will be devoted at re-thinking and re-designing wired network equipment and infrastructures towards more energy-sustainable and eco-friendly technologies and perspectives.

FP7 TREND Network of Excellence

TREND is a Network of Excellence, coordinated by Politecnico di Torino, funded by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme. TREND aims at integrating the activities of major European players in networking, including manufacturers, operators, research centers, to quantitatively assess the energy demand of current and future telecom infrastructures, and to design energy-efficient, scalable and sustainable future networks.
The NoE will integrate and drive towards commonly agreed technical goals the many recent research efforts in energy-efficient networking, laying down the bases for a new holistic approach to energy-efficient networking, investigating effective strategies and mechanisms to reduce energy consumption in current and future networks in general, and the future Internet in particular.

FP6 INTERMEDIA Network of Excellence

INTERMEDIA seeks to progress beyond home and device-centric convergence toward truly user-centric convergence of multimedia. Our vision is The User as Multimedia Central: the user as the point at which services (multimedia applications) and the means for interacting with them (devices and interfaces) converge. Key to our vision is that users are provided with a personalized interface and with personalized content independently of the particular set of physical devices they have available for interaction (on the body, or in their environment), and independently of the physical space in which they are situated. Our approach to this vision is to investigate a flexible wearable platform that supports dynamic composition of wearable devices, an ad-hoc connection to devices in the environment, a continuous access to multimedia networks, as well as adaptation of content to devices and user context.

Software Platforms and Hardware Facilities

During the last years, the TNT-Lab has been focusing its effort towards the design and the development of innovative open-source software prototype, as well as in the setup and the maintanance of advenced research-oriented hardware facilities.
The following list summarizes the most relevant software and hardware projects led by the TNT-Lab.

The OpenVolcano Software Project

The Open Virtualization Operating Layer for Cloud/fog Advanced NetwOrks (OpenVolcano) is a comprehensive open-source platform for fog and mobile edge computing for 5G-ready infrastructures. To this end, the openVolcano platform has been designed through a highly modular and extensible architecture, exposing a number of latest-generation APIs, protocols, and interfaces (e.g., from OpenStack, to OpenFlow, libVirt, and ETSI NFV). It allows to create complex IaaS and PaaS services with tight delay/performance constraints as "templates", and to dinamically instantiate them at the network edge to single mobile users or groups. OpenVolcano provides a complete solution stack to autonomously and scalably re-locate/migrate service components those computing infrastructures that are enough close to the users on-the-move to meet service requirements.

The FI-WARE Lab Network Genoa node

The TNT-Lab is hosting one of the larger nodes in the FI-WARE Lab Network. It includes 448 CPU cores, more than 1 TB of RAM, and 21.8 TB of storage. FI-WARE Lab Dashboard: http://infographic.lab.fiware.org/

The DROP Software Project (discontinued)

The Distributed SW ROuter Project (DROP) aims to enable a novel distributed paradigm for the control and the management of flexible IP-router platforms based on commodity HW and the Linux operating system. In rough words, DROP allows building extensible and flexible multi-chassis routers on top of server HW platforms and the Linux operating system.
DROP is partially based on the IETF ForCES architecture, and allows building logical network nodes through the aggregation of multiple devices (i.e., SRs) that host “standard” Linux SW objects devoted to packet forwarding (i.e., the Linux kernel) or to control operations (e.g., Quagga, Xorp, etc.).

The TCPtest Application

We implemented a simple and very light-weight testing application for generating and receiving TCP traffic, named “Tcptest.” With respect to other well-known applications for generating TCP flows (e.g., TTCP, iPerf among the others), Tcptest allows simpler flow generation (especially in the presence of multiple simultaneous connections), avoiding useless overhead operations (e.g., disk access, etc.). Tcptest can be used both as client (receiver) and server (sender) of connections. Once a connection is established, Tcptest sends a desired number of segments at the maximum MTU. When the last segment is successfully received by the client, the TCP connection is immediately closed. The segments of all the generated connections contain replicas of a same pre-allocated pattern.
The amount of data sent, the number of simultaneous TCP connections, and other options are configurable through a simple command line interface. Tcptest is able to work in two modes:

  • One-shot: the chosen number of TCP connections is generated only once.
  • Continuous: the chosen number of TCP connections is generated in a persistent and cyclic way.
In both the modes above, Tcptest provides the average duration time of connections and other monitoring parameters made available by the Linux kernel. Continuous mode also provides the number of running and completed connections every second.
TCPTest is released under the GNU-GPL licence.
